Distillation

Ashdod Refinery produces and markets distillates for fuel and gas marketing companies in Israel, and is a major supplier to the Israeli energy market. About 40% of the fuels consumed in Israel are produced at the Ashdod refinery. The refinery sells about 70% of the products it produces in the Israeli market, and exports about 30% to overseas customers. The refinery considers the ability to supply its products in a reliable and continuous manner a national mission, which is a major factor in the capacity of the Israeli economy to continue and prosper.

Ashdod Refinery imports and refines crude oil and intermediates for petroleum distillates intended for marketing in the local market and for export. The nominal refining capacity (Name Plate Capacity) of the refinery is about 5.4 million tons of crude oil per year.

The purpose of the refining process is the production of energy products and raw materials for crude oil downstream industries.

The chemical compounds created by the distillation process have a wide variety of uses:

  • Light gases – for self-use as energy in the refinery.
  • LPG (a mixture of propane and butane) – is mainly used for home cooking and as raw material for the industry.
  • Naphtha – is used as raw material mainly for the petrochemical industry which is responsible for the production of everyday products used in many areas of life.
  • Gasoline of various types – used to operate gasoline engines, compliant with the European EURO 5 and EURO 6 standards.
  • DSL (Kerosene) – fuel for jet planes and for heating.
  • Transportation diesel fuel for diesel engines – transportation and industry in accordance with EURO 5 and EURO 6 standards.
  • Fuel oil of all types – heavy fuel used for industrial furnaces, electricity generation and ship propulsion.

Delivery

The company operates a terminal for dispensing distillates to road tankers within the refinery. The scope of activity at the company’s distillate dispensing terminal is the largest in Israel, given its proximity to the demand centers, where every day hundreds of road tankers arrive at the refinery to be filled with distillates.

Power generation

Arf operates two power plants using cogeneration technology to produce 109 MWh of power and tons of steam per hour.

The first power plant was established in 2009, and generates about 49 MWh of power and about 60 tons of steam per hour.

The second power plant was established in 2012, and generates about 60 MW of power per hour and about 60 tons of steam per hour.

The steam and some of the power are used by the Refinery while most of the power is sold to customers and to the grid. The fact that power plants' main fuel is natural gas contributes significantly to improving the energy utilization of Ashdod Oil Refineries.
